Supported Independent Living (SIL)

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is sometimes called shared accommodation. SIL is an NDIS support where a person with a disability lives with others. Supported Independent Living is funded under Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Life in your NDIS plan. You will also receive support with everyday tasks like cleaning, cooking and personal care. The NDIS does not fund the cost of rent, board, transport, and other day-to-day expenses such as food and activities.

Who is eligible for SIL Funding?

The NDIS provides funding for Supported Independent Living, based on whether this is a support that is reasonable and necessary for you. An individual must have SIL noted in their NDIS plan in order to access this funding.
SIL is best suited for participants who have high disability support needs and require a significant amount of assistance throughout the day.
During your NDIS planning meeting, your NDIS planner will consider a number of things when determining whether SIL is the right support for you, including:

  • Your individual circumstances and needs
  • Your age (18-65)
  • Your goals and preferences
  • Your independence, living skills and capacity-building needs
  • If modifications to your home or assistive technology may increase your independence and safety
  • Information, reports and assessments provided by you, health professionals and providers
  • If you need person-to-person support
  • Other home and living options that might suit you
  • What is value for money

What is difference between SIL and SDA?

SIL is the NDIS funding you will be allocated to receive support within the home in order for you to live as independently as possible. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is dedicated accessible housing for NDIS participants. SDA properties include accessibility options. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is assessed and funded separately to SIL through Capital Supports.
You can live in an SDA house while receiving SIL funding to assist you with your daily living activities. You can receive SIL funding without the need for SDA. This means you may not require specialist housing, but still require the levels of support that SIL provides.

Please note: We bill in line with the NDIS Price Guide, which generally increases annually.

Can you use SIL funding for your own residence?

Supported Independent Living happens in your own home, whether you live on your own or with other people. Based on your needs, your NDIS planner will help you determine whether you are eligible for and if SIL is the best funding for your situation. There may be other Individual disability accommodations & support that suit you better.

Short-Term Accommodation (STA)

What is Short-Term Accommodation (STA)?

Under the NDIS, STA replaces what used to be called respite for people with a disability.
STA is support where someone with a disability has a short stay away from home. This allows you to try new things, make friends and learn skills. It also gives your family or carers a short break from their caring role.

Short Term Accommodation at Easy Life Home Care

Our short-term Accommodation properties are a home away from home for people with a disability.
Short Term Accommodation can assist with unexpected emergencies, housing gaps, transitional periods or allowing primary caregivers and people with a disability the time to temporarily focus on other responsibilities.
A stay with us allows you to meet new people, try new things and recharge. STA means your family or carer can get some time to unwind too. It’s a win-win for you both!

What activities will I get to do?

Like respite, our Short-Term Accommodation services can give you the chance to meet new people and try new activities.
This can be seeing the latest movie, going out for a meal, going to the beach, checking out a local attraction, or playing your favourite sport.
No matter your age or tastes – there’s something for you.

How long can I stay in one of Easy Life Home Care’s properties?

Your funding in your NDIS plan will allow for up to 28-days a year in Short Term Accommodation.
So, depending on your package, you could stay overnight, for a weekend, or a holiday. It’s up to you!
This means you will stay with others who are about the same age.

Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA)

What is Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)?

Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) can help if you need a place to live while you are waiting for a confirmed long-term housing solution.
For example, you may be waiting for some home modifications to be made before you can move into your new SDA property.
The NDIS usually funds MTA as one-off support for stays of up to three months (90 days), while things are getting sorted.

Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) at Easy Life Home Care

At Easy Life Home Care, we offer MTA for those times when your confirmed long-term housing solution isn’t quite ready.
This could be if you are:

  • Waiting home modifications to be done
  • Waiting for assistive technology to arrive
  • Waiting for your confirmed SDA to be available
  • Waiting for a new build SDA to be ready
  • Leaving hospital or aged care
  • Experiencing a breakdown of support and can’t live in your current home

NDIS Support Categories

MTA is funded under Core Supports in your NDIS plan. To fund this, the NDIS needs evidence that the person has somewhere to move into at the end of the MTA funding.
MTA covers the accommodation costs of where you stay. You’ll still need to pay for other things like your food, phone, internet, and other bills as usual. It also doesn’t include any personal care or other support you get in your home. You need to be funded for other disability supports separately if you need them while you stay in medium-term accommodation

Please note: We bill in line with the NDIS Price Guide, which generally increases annually.
